The walk-on from Glassboro continues his rise as one of the top running backs in college football.

Add three more to the ledger. Paul James is creating a reputation as a big play scoring machine for himself, as the redshirt sophomore ran for scores of 55 and 52 yards (James also had a 13 yard TD run early in the first quarter). His magnificent day was overshadowed, however, by the injuries sustained at the quarterback position. Check out the highlights below:

This was a game that tested the depth of the Rutgers football team. Most notably, Gary Nova left the game after just one touchdown drive in the first quarter. The junior signal-caller took a hit to the helmet by EMU defensive back David Pullman. Flood stated that Nova's status for the upcoming week is uncertain, <strike>but</strike> and that he was not cleared to return for the second half. With the coaches being so mum on the injury, it seems as if it was mainly a precaution to keep him out for the game and just let backup Chas Dodd get some live reps. A good decision, considering how rusty Dodd looked for the remainder of the game.

Dodd finished with 45 yards passing on 4 of 9 completions. This was after Nova went 4-for-4 on his scoring drive and was getting into a real rhythm with his receivers. For Dodd, the rhythm was never established, as he was simply a caretaker of the offense until James could score. James was a real blessing for the senior QB, because not only did he overpower the entire EMU defense with his big runs, but he also accounted for over 66% of Dodd's yardage on one screen play. It's possible Dodd can be a competent solution at QB, but you can tell that giving the majority of reps to Nova in practice has taken a toll on Chas' ability to manage the position.

There were other injury concerns as well. Starting center Betim Bujari did not play (undisclosed injury), but former JUCO transfer Dallas Hendrikson filled in very well. Aside from the size-difference and the mane of hair, you might not have noticed that Bujari wasn't starting. There were a couple of snaps where Dodd seemed surprised to get the ball so quickly, and also one false start penalty resulting in a miscommunication, but overall Hendrikson proved he can be a capable backup when needed.

Jeremy Deering was also held out for the game, leaving Quron Pratt to fill in at kick returner and Tejay Johnson to play safety. Pratt did extraordinarily well, flashing his speed on a 99-yard kickoff return after EMU's first score of the game. The senior wideout also had another nice return in the second half, proving that special teams has depth and talent.

As for Tejay Johnson, the converted safety did not make a big impact on defense. The defense as a whole did not impress much, as a matter of fact. EMU QB Tyler Benz picked apart the RU defense with the same play over and over, throwing to TE Tyreese Russell. With the amount of slant patterns they had him run, you wonder if there was anything else in the EMU playbook. Ah, but there was! Late in the first half, in Rutgers territory, EMU had a running back take a direct snap under center, pitched the lateral back to Benz, who threw across field on a trick play to Ryan Brumfield. It was a good call on a drive that moved really well against the Rutgers D.

At some point, you have to wonder if Dave Cohen is the real problem. Losing personnel is one thing, but RU did not adjust to the playcalling, and hasn't done so for three games running now. I put that all on the coaching. This was against a mediocre MAC quarterback. Meaning, a quarterback mediocre to play in the MAC. Teddy Bridgewater is crushing the competition. Blake Bortles just beat Penn State in Happy Valley. Rutgers won't be able to overpower these teams with just talent. Coaching them up is a big factor.

Let's end on a good note, however. Paul James is emerging as a serious Doak Walker candidate and the best RB Rutgers has seen since a little guy (with tree trunks for legs) named Ray Rice was on the banks of the Old Raritan. Ron Prince is really utilizing his skills, and even had some different looks to keep the defense guessing. Chas Dodd under-center in a diamond formation was a great setup that led to James' TD in the third. James even proved he can finish those big runs. With two 50-plus yard runs added to his career numbers, James now has as many 50-plus runs in one season as Ray Rice had in three years at Rutgers. Every game and every play is just a big play waiting to happen, and RU fans are loving every minute of it.

What do you think about the game? Are you worried about Nova, or confident he'll be fine? Did you like Dodd in at quarterback? Leave your comments below. Starting Monday, it's Arkansas week.

Nova headed for the locker room in the first quarter and never returned. Did he sustain a serious injury?

Just as the passing game was starting to look good again, Nova gets injured in the first quarter and never returns for the entire game. Chas Dodd filled in admirably, yet the offense never found a consistent rhythm without its entrenched starter. How serious is the injury? Can't say yet. The school is keeping mum on the matter, so we'll have to wait for Flood's press conference. In the meantime, here are some key points to take away from the game:

Paul James. 3 more touchdowns. That is all.

Quron Pratt had an amazing day on special teams. The senior wideout broke open a kickoff return for a touchdown, as well as had a few other great returns. He came pretty close to a blocked punt as well.

Brandon Coleman continues to have his weekly quintessential drop-that-shouldn't-have-been. Looking at some early mock drafts, Coleman isn't even listed in the top 5 for wide receivers, and his hands could be the reason. He has all the measurables, but he'll have to make those tough catches to be a lock for the first round. Chas Dodd threw a good-looking ball to him in the second half, dropping it right over his shoulder. The defender made a good play, but that was a very catchable ball.

Speaking of Dodd, the offense just doesn't move as well with him under center. It's most likely due to Nova getting all of the first-team reps, but unfortunately you can't split those reps between two quarterbacks. Nova was moving the ball really well on his only drive, hitting all of his receivers on the money. Dodd definitely struggled with some placement, and even had a ball batted down at the line (only because he stared down his receiver on the throw, not due to his height).

The defense hasn't made the progress you wanted to see from the first game, getting gashed through the air by EMU quarterback Tyler Benz. Benz threw for 355 yards on 24 or 40 passing. Not exactly the numbers you want to see from a mediocre MAC QB. Outside of a trick play, the EMU offense consisted mostly of short range passes to the outside. Honestly, without Tyreese Russell, the Eagles would have been in serious trouble. Unfortunately, RU had no answer for him in this game.

Tackling is a serious issue. They really need to go back to the fundamentals of the wrap, considering how many times Benz was able to escape the initial tackle for loss.

In other injury news, Dallas Hendrikson did a sufficient job filling in for Betim Bujari. Jeremy Deering played for a couple of series, but Tejay Johnson played virtually the entire game for him. Jamil Merrell also got some fourth quarter reps.

Finally, you can't say enough about the class of the Rutgers football program with the way they handled the number retirement for Eric LeGrand. Kyle Flood waited to enter the locker room at the half to give a very poignant speech, and Eric was once again very inspirational as the new spokesperson for Team LeGrand, a new division of the Reeves Foundation. I'll post a video and some pictures of the ceremony later.

Look for the full recap tomorrow, and don't forget to leave a comment with your thoughts about the game.

With so many distractions, the key for Rutgers will be to focus on the opponent at hand.

For Rutgers' third game of the season, there seems to be a plethora of distractions to keep RU's focus from the game itself. Eric LeGrand is a huge presence at the University, and the retirement ceremony for his number 52 will be very emotional for many players and coaches, as it should be. Furthermore, Arkansas looms next week, and many of the players (especially the young guys) may look ahead to a game against a high-profile foe. Is that enough to distract the Scarlet Knights from defeating an overmatched opponent?

The Matchup

If you're looking for a way that Eastern Michigan could give Rutgers fits, it's the passing game. Tyler Benz is a short-game quarterback, an offense that really frustrated the Knights out in Fresno. If the linebackers don't have their tackling fundamentals down pat by now, then EMU could really rack up the YAC. Speed should help slow down the passing game, but making tackles in space is what will shut down the Eagles. Steve Longa has cheetah-speed coming out of the middle linebacker position, so look for him to generate double-digit tackles on Saturday. The EMU offensive line is also quite porous, meaning that Darius Hamilton and Marcus Thompson have a chance to rack up some sacks and TFLs this week.

The Eagles' running game should not be much of a factor, as EMU ran for paltry 61 yards on 35 carries against Penn State. Rutgers' run defense is still a wall, and it should be tough for Bronson Hill to get anything going, further pressuring Tyler Benz to perform on offense. His top receiving target is TE Tyreese Russell, a 6'3" 240 pound junior from Chicago. The experienced pass-catcher has the talent to overpower some of the RU defenders, making him a top red-zone target. The key will be making it to the red-zone, which I think will be quite difficult for offensive coordinator Stan Parrish. Parrish, for those of you who don't remember, spent five seasons at Rutgers as Doug Graber's assistant head coach in the mid-nineties. I think it's safe to say he doesn't carry many trade secrets on the Scarlet Knights.

If Rutgers is distracted early, the Eagles have enough talent on defense to fluster the Knights. Eastern Michigan held Penn State to 0 for 4 on third-down conversions in the first half last week. A frustrated Gary Nova could mean trouble for the RU offense, but I expect the run game to eventually overpower the Eagles. Paul James is really coming on as a star tailback, but don't overlook the importance of Savon Huggins. Ron Prince needs multiple backs to produce for RU to thrive, and this could serve as yet another confidence boost for the former five-star recruit. A key factor will be the center position for Rutgers, as Betim Bujari is a game-time decision heading into the game. The back-up center was not settled during training camp, which leaves Dallas Hendrikson as the only lineman with game experience to fall back on. Tom Luicci of the Star-Ledger indicated that Antwan Lowery could serve as a back-up as well, although he does not have any experience at the position.

Senior LB Sean Kurtz leads a defense that can hold serve for a drive but give up a big play in a flash. That's good recipe for Brandon Coleman or Leonte Carroo, or maybe both, to make some noise. The Eagles defense has the talent to take advantage of mistakes by RU, as the only points scored against Penn State came from the D.

The Prediction

Bovada currently has Rutgers at -28, which seems about right. I don't think RU will cover the spread, however, only due to Flood and Co. keeping the playbook tight for a vanilla showing on offense. I see it closer to a 31-13 victory for the Knights, with a heavy dose of running and some basic passes to keep the receivers fresh.

Want to know more about Eastern Michigan? Here's what the folks over at Hustle Belt had to say about this Saturday's matchup.

Next in our edition of keeping the enemy close, we check on the Eastern Michigan Eagles:

Q: This is the first meeting between Eastern Michigan and Rutgers in the history of the two schools. For RU fans who may not be familiar with EMU, what is the state of the program right now? Are fans optimistic, doubtful, hopeful?

Some of the younger fans (e.g., underclassmen) may still be optimistic, but among older fans -- particularly those who've been around more than five years -- I think there's a fear that this season will be a lost season with a "lame duck" head coach who's proven to be mediocre at best. The on-field talent is there, but Ron English has demonstrated over the last four years that he doesn't know what to do with that talent.

Q: What is your take on the state of the MAC for 2013? Is it a one-team race with NIU, or can other teams make a surprise run?

No, it's certainly not a one-team race. It's early to tell, because NIU has only played one game, but right now it looks to me like Ball State could give the Huskies a run for their money in the West Division, and it's far too early to count Toledo out. In the East, Bowling Green looks like the team to beat, particularly after the way they handled Kent State last weekend.

Q: Based on outside perception, EMU head coach Ron English appears to be on the hot seat entering 2013. He had some momentum after winning MAC coach of the year in 2011, but last season didn't go as well for him. Do you think English makes it through the season?

"Appears to be on the hot seat" is a bit of an understatement. This was a major topic of offseason discussion among EMU fans. I'd be willing to bet that English will not be EMU's head coach after this season. His record through four years was not good, and although the defense looks better since he took over as defensive coordinator this year, this doesn't look like a team that can win enough games to earn English a contract extension. Although recruiting has been somewhat improved since English took over (which may have to do with English and his staff, but also may have something to do with facilities improvements that EMU has completed, such as an indoor practice facility -- something EMU should have had years ago), his won-loss record is worse than that of his three predecessors. Add in a new athletic director who may be eager to make her mark with a high-profile hire, and I think you've got a recipe for an unemployed former head coach.

If you're reading this and thinking I'm not a fan of Ron English, you're right. I wasn't impressed with his hiring to begin with, and he's done nothing on or off the field to change that opinion for the better. Performance matters, and 8 FBS wins in 4+ years shouldn't be enough to keep a head coaching job.

Q: What is your take on offensive coordinator Stan Parrish? The former Scarlet Knight assistant head coach spent five seasons at Rutgers from 1990-1995. Is he an asset or a liability for the Eagles?

Hard to tell so far. After two games, the offense under Stan Parrish looks a lot like the offense did under Ken Karcher, which is to say extremely predictable play calling and no downfield passing attack to speak of. I'm not ready to blame Parrish for this, because I think a fairly conservative offense is what English wants; it's hard to account for it any other way at this point.

Q: Who are some players that Rutgers fans should keep an eye on during the game?

On special teams, Tyler Allen is a dangerous returner, and I suspect we'll see him return at least one or two kickoffs for touchdowns this year. Austin Barnes, a true freshman, continues EMU's recent tradition of good punting, which is important because EMU's punters get called on far too often.

Something else to keep an eye on is EMU's field goal unit. They played so poorly against Penn State, that I wouldn't be too surprised if the coaches try Barnes as the kicker, or if they leave the regular offense in on fourth downs in field goal range.

Speaking of the offense, Tyler Benz seems to be a reasonably efficient quarterback who can complete a high percentage of short passes with few or no turnovers. He's periodically shown that he can also go long, but he's rarely called on to do that. Although he's first and foremost a passer, he's got the legs to take advantage if an opportunity to run presents itself. Tight end Tyreese Russell is his top target for those shorter passes. Bronson Hill is the top running back, and although he gashed Toledo for ridiculous yards last year, he's struggled a bit so far this fall. Darius Jackson is every bit as dangerous a running back, and is possibly running better so far this year, but he seems to be stuck behind Hill on the depth chart.

Senior middle linebacker Sean Kurtz is one of the leaders on an EMU defense that seems to be generally improved, but still prone to giving up big plays. What I've seen so far this year is a defense that might hold strong for a while but then things will break down for a play or two and they'll give up half the field in a flash. Other guys to watch on defense might be Cy Maughmer and Pat O'Connor on the defensive line, and outside linebacker Hunter Matt, who scored EMU's only points against Penn State.
