Steve Pikiell continues to build a recruiting class in 2024 that could change the course of the program for years to come.
On Friday, four-star big man Lathan Sommerville announced his commitment to the Scarlet Knights. The top-150 player overall chose Rutgers over Villanova, Seton Hall, Virginia Tech, Missouri, and Xavier.
The Scarlet Knights continue to build an elite 2024 class as Sommerville joins five-star Ace Bailey and four-star Dellquan Warren. Sommerville took his official visit to Piscataway in February and felt good about the program as a whole.
Sommerville, the 6-foot-10 center, has great touch from the midrange and is a talented passer out of the post. Most importantly, his overall feel and IQ for the game is well beyond his years. Sommerville brings the necessary size and physicality needed to compete in the Big Ten.
Sommerville was courted by many high-level programs but highlighted the culture of Rutgers when making his decision. He added that he was recruited by assistant coach T.J. Thompson since his days playing 15U ball. Thompson, who enjoyed a successful playing career at George Washington, grew close to Sommerville’s father, Marcellus, while playing in France.
Pikiell and the Scarlet Knights continue to recruit well in the Class of 2024. As of now, there are three commits that were high on the wish list of the Rutgers with a decision waiting from New Jersey’s top player Dylan Harper.
To this point, fans should be feeling good about the future of Rutgers Basketball. Sommerville, along with Bailey and Warren, will bring a class that will be ready to compete right away.
