On Monday afternoon, Rutgers men’s soccer head coach Jim McElderry was a guest on the inaugural episode of Big Ten Today on BTN. The appearance comes after the Scarlet Knights defeated No. 11 Indiana in Bloomington on Friday night by the score of 2-1. Nico Rosamilia and Jackson Temple scored second half goals to hand the Hoosiers their first Big Ten regular season loss at home in six years and just third overall in league play since 2015 as well. Last spring, Indiana won the Big Ten regular season title for a third straight year and advanced to the NCAA Championship game.
Friday’s performance was a statement victory for McElderry’s team and resonated throughout all of college soccer. The United Coaches Poll comes out on Tuesday and Rutgers is expected to be included. Top Drawer Soccer has Rutgers No. 12 in their weekly poll that came out on Monday. Of course, they need to take care of business tonight against Penn at 7 p.m. ET airing on Big Ten + before Big Ten play resumes to keep the positive momentum moving forward.
You can watch McElderry’s interview with BTN anchor Dave Revsine beginning at the 14:00 minute mark (video is cued up). McElderry discusses the importance of the win over Indiana, the rebuilding process for the program, the connection and support with Rutgers soccer alums like Alexi Lalas and Peter Vermes, the desire to continue making history on the banks, as well as the key to building off this moment beginning tonight against Penn.
