Rutgers football added to its 2022 recruiting class on Monday morning with defensive back Thomas Amankwaa announced his verbal commitment to the program.

After visiting Rutgers for the Delaware game this past weekend, Amankwaa received an offer from the coaching staff. He didn’t wait long to make a decision and is now the 15th commit in the 2022 class for RU.

The Hillsborough native is listed at 6’0” and 180 pounds. Other offers reported by 247 Sports, who lists him as a 3-star prospect, include Syracuse, Pitt, Akron, Ball State, Kent State, Western Michigan and Marshall among others.

Amankwaa has led Hillsborough to a 3-0 start this fall playing both ways. In an upset win over then No. 17 Phillipsburg, he ran for 161 yards on 15 carries and had 3 catches for 25 yards. In the 21-14 overtime victory, Amankwaa scored the game winning touchdown and then had an interception to seal the win.

He is most likely to begin his Rutgers career at safety but has the ability to play cornerback as well. Amankwaa joins Davison Igbinosun as the only defensive backs in the 2022 class for Rutgers and the two know each other after playing against one another in high school.

Here are highlights of Amankwaa’s junior season with Hillsborough.
