Rutgers football earned a big win on the recruiting trail on Friday as the 6th highest rated prospect in New Jersey in the class of 2022, Kenny Fletcher, verbally committed to the program.

The 6’4”, 215 pounder from Delran is a high 3-star prospect in 247 Sports composite rankings and is listed as the 22nd best weak side defensive lineman in the 2022 class. He is a 4-star recruit per Rivals.

Fletcher made a decision among a final five of Penn State, Michigan State, Kentucky, Louisville and Rutgers. He also accumulated other power five offers that included Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Syracuse, Boston College, Pitt, Ole Miss, and Duke.

As a junior, Fletcher made 21 tackles, including seven for a loss, as well as 11 quarterback hurries, a forced fumble and batted pass in four games. On the offensive end, he caught 23 passes for 350 yards and a touchdown.

Fletcher explained his decision to Todderick Hunt of NJ Advance Media, saying “A lot of thought about how far I would be away from my family (if I went elsewhere went into it). I also considered playing time, whether each school saw me as a top recruit. If they had an excellent program for what I want to major in, and if the facilities were nice and if it was a true brotherhood over there. And they had all of that at Rutgers.”

He continued, “Coach Fran Brown, Jim Panagos and Coach (Jamaal) Westerman are the main ones recruiting me. I have a strong relationship with them. It’s like they’re family because they’re always talking to me and motivating me to be better and make the right life decisions.”

Fletcher has been productive as a two-way players in high school and has the potential to play on either side of the ball in college due to his speed, size and athletic ability. He is a great addition to the program and his versatility will give him a chance to make an impact on special teams at a minimum early on in his career. His ceiling is as a multi-year impact starter.

Rutgers currently has eight prospects committed to the 2022 recruiting class and Fletcher is the second highest rated behind 4-star linebacker Anthony Johnson. 247 Sports ranks the current class 11th nationally and 4th in the Big Ten as of now.
