No. 5 Rutgers field hockey earned an impressive road win on Friday in Happy Valley against No. 4 Penn State. The 1-0 victory was the Scarlet Knights eighth ranked win of the season, a program record. Six of those wins have come on the road, including three against top ten foes and two against top five teams.
After a scoreless first half, Rachel Houston scored three minutes into the third quarter to give Rutgers the 1-0 lead. It was a huge momentum shift and the defense held strong the rest of the way. PSU had three corners in the final minute of the game but were shut down. All-American goalkeeper Gianna Glatz had a season high eight saves, which moved her into sixth place all-time in program history with 314 for her career.
The Scarlet Knights held a 12-11 edge in shots while the Nittany Lions held a 12-8 advantage with corners.
RU has defeated Penn State three consecutive games now after sweeping their two game series in the spring last season.
Rutgers is 10-2 overall and 3-1 in Big Ten play.
The Scarlet Knights have a week off now to rest up for a six game stretch that includes four contests at home. They’re back in action against No. 8 Maryland (8-4; 1-3) on Friday, October 15 at 3 p.m. followed by Sunday, October 17 at 1 p.m. against Columbia (6-3).
