Episode No. 110 of the On The Banks podcast is here. With the Rutgers football team on a much needed bye week following the loss to Northwestern, we will wait until next week to discuss the program and its next opponent in Illinois.
In this week’s episode, we welcome back Rutgers great Anthony Ashnault. The wrestling program’s only four-time All-American and only three-time Big Ten champion first joined us for his first extended interview after winning the national championship at 149 pounds in 2019. The program’s all-time wins leader sat down this week to discuss his wrestling career post-college and his transition into becoming an assistant coach for Rutgers.
We discussed his experience at the U.S. Olympic Trials last Spring, his relationship with head coach Scott Goodale, his decision to take on his new role with the program, his thoughts on the season ahead for Rutgers wrestling, the projected lineup for this team and much more.
Ashnault spoke about the weight class decisions upcoming for Sebastian Rivera and Sammy Alvarez, the potential and work ethic of Jon Poznanski, the tremendous talent and need for consistency from Jackson Turley, his excitement about Robert Kannaird, his relationship with former teammate Mike VanBrill and plenty more as well.
Our wrestling preview series has also begun with a detailed look at the lightweights and middleweights here and here.
We also cover a fall sports update at the top of the episode.
Thanks to Anthony for being our guest for this episode and for providing such great insight on his own career and the current state of the Rutgers wrestling program. And thank you for listening!
