Tyshon Fogg to return to Rutgers for 2021 season

The Scarlet Knights will get another top defender back next season.

It has been an eventful offseason for Rutgers’ football to this point. They have landed several transfers and received news of some key players returning in 2021.

On Thursday, the Scarlet Knights received some more good news. Tyshon Fogg announced on Twitter that he will be back on the banks next season.

Rutgers finished the season with a record of 3-6 but improved on both sides of the ball. They matched their win total from the previous two seasons combined. Greg Schiano is preparing this team to take another step forward and the return of some key players will help — and Fogg is the latest.

Fogg played eight games for Rutgers during the 2020 season and totaled 65 tackles and one sack. This was a bit of a down year for the senior linebacker, who battled injuries throughout the season, including missing one game. This was after logging a career-high 96 tackles in 2019 as a junior. The importance of Fogg cannot be discounted for the 2021 season.

The senior will return for his fifth season at Rutgers and will continue to be a leader on and off the field. He started the season strong with 14 tackles against Michigan State in East Lansing. Fogg finished the season like he started with 11 tackles and a sack in the finale against Nebraska. In between, there was a bit of inconsistency but there is no doubt that the Scarlet Knights are happy to see Fogg back next season, who is a two-time captain.

Fogg now joins Olakunle Fatukasi as the linebackers who have announced their intentions to return to Piscataway. Fatukasi led the Big Ten with 101 tackles in 2020. The Scarlet Knights were able to land DB Patrice Rene from North Carolina and Ifeanyi Maijeh from Temple as transfer. This will attempt to make up for Brendon White and Michael Dwumfour declaring for the NFL Draft. On the offensive side of the ball, Bo Melton will return and David Nwaogwugwu has transferred from Temple.

The front seven was much improved for the Scarlet Knights in 2020. That will continue with the return of Fatukasi and now Fogg.
