On Wednesday night, Rutgers announced that four athletes in three different sports and one staff member have tested positive for COVID-19. Here is the full statement:
“Rutgers Athletics announced today four confirmed student-athlete positives and one athletics staff member positive for COVID-19. The four positives were in the sports of men’s lacrosse, gymnastics, and wrestling. Those student-athletes and the staff member have been quarantined and the university, in conjunction with public health officials, is conducting contact tracing to identify any individuals with whom the student-athletes have been in contact with.”
Previously, Rutgers announced on July 25 that the football team had six players test positive and stopped workouts to quarantine the entire program. It was later reported that 28 players and multiple staff members tested positive during that time. Rutgers football has since resumed activities and head coach Greg Schiano said “They’re all doing well,” when he discussed it in mid-August.
We will provide any details on the latest cases of COVID-19 within the athletic department as they become available.
