Greg Schiano continues to have success recruiting the state of Ohio since returning to Rutgers, as the program picked up a verbal commitment from 3-star athlete Shawn Munnerlyn. He is the 23rd commit in the 2021 class and third from the “Buckeye State.”

The 6-foot-5, 205 pound athlete plays for Independence High School in Columbus, Ohio. Munnerlyn holds two dozen offers per 247 Sports which includes Minnesota, Purdue, West Virginia, Arizona State, Boston College, Kansas, Cincinnati, Army and Navy among others. While he doesn’t have a composite ranking, 247 Sports lists him as a 3-star prospect and rates him the 66th best recruit in Ohio and 143rd best athlete in the 2021 class overall. Rivals also has him rated as a 3-star recruit. He committed to Rutgers on Saturday morning and is projected to play tight end under assistant coach Nunzio Campanile.

His experience as a wide receiver in high school and big frame give him the potential to be a big playmaker in the up tempo offense being implemented by offensive coordinator Sean Gleeson. Per MaxPreps, Munnerlyn had 19 catches for 409 yards and 6 touchdowns as a junior last season.

After Munnerlyn’s pledge, Rutgers 2021 recruiting class is currently ranked the 27th best in the nation and 8th best in the Big Ten per 247 Sports. You can watch his junior season highlights here.
