For Steve Pikiell’s tenure, potshots at the team schedule have come from all sorts of critics.
Well, those critics can now close up shop. According to college hoops insider Jeff Goodman, Rutgers will face off against Baylor in the Jimmy V Classic next December at Madison Square Garden.
Sources: The Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden expected to feature the following matchups this December:
— Jeff Goodman (@GoodmanHoops) May 7, 2020
- No. 1 Baylor vs. No. 15 Rutgers
- No. 3 Gonzaga vs. No. 20 Tennessee
Goodman has Baylor as his number 1 team in a very early preseason rankings, while he has Rutgers at 15. Baylor did spend a long stretch of the season at number 1 and got a lot of talk as being a number one seed until a late 2-3 finish.
In what could be a first to 50 wins type game, Rutgers was sixth in defensive efficiency last season while the Baylor Bears ranked fourth. This is the kind of battle that could be rough on the eyes, but good for the soul.
The Rutgers Scarlet Knights last played Michigan in January at Madison Square Garden on Super Saturday, falling by six points. They went on a nice little run at the mecca when the Big Ten Tournament played there three years ago.
Rutgers will also serve as the home team against Michigan State at the Garden for next season’s Super Saturday.
In a time when people are dying for sports to come by, this gives hope that—in seven months—maybe we’ll have a marquee match-up to look forward to.
