The 6’3”, 195 pound athlete was a key two-way player for Union high school this past season, helping them to a 12-1 record and their first sectional title in over two decades. In his first season at the varsity level, Igbinosun averaged 10.8 yards per carry on 18 rushes and 5 touchdowns on the ground, while also producing 43 receptions for 737 yards and 8 touchdowns through the air. On defense at the safety position, he had 96 tackles, 7 for a loss, 2 interceptions, 5 pass deflections and 1 fumble recovery. He also blocked 1 field goal on special teams. All stats per MaxPreps.
Igbinosun is ranked the 26th best prospect in New Jersey and 98th best safety nationally per 247 Sports composite rankings. The recruiting site lists over a dozen offers including from Purdue, Pitt, Syracuse, and Temple among others. Boston College was recruiting him as well. Ultimately, Igbinosun chose to stay home and tight ends coach Nunzio Campanile was his lead recruiter.
Rutgers has strong ties to Union high school, as head coach Lou Grasso is a former player and the current roster under Greg Schiano includes alums Mike Tverdov and Ahmirr Robinson.
This is an intriguing addition to the program, as Igbinosun is big, athletic and can play multiple positions. He told Todderick Hunt of NJ Advance Media that Rutgers envisions him playing safety, but his versatility could give him an oppportunity to help the program in several spots depending on the depth of the roster at certain positions. Special teams is a role he could help with early on in his career as well.
Rutgers now has 16 prospects verbally committed in its 2021 recruiting class, including 9 players from New Jersey. 247 Sports composite rankings list the 2021 class as 17th best nationally and 7th best in the Big Ten.
Here are junior season highlights of Igbinosun.
