Rutgers football added its fourth commitment to the 2021 recruiting class on Wednesday night, as East Orange Campus running back Al-Shadee Salaam pledged to the program. He is listed as a 3-star athlete and 22nd best prospect in New Jersey, per 247 Sports Composite rankings.

Per 247 Sports, Salaam holds almost a dozen offers including from Purdue, Minnesota, Boston College, Pitt and Temple, among others. The 5’9” prospect is known for his speed per Todderick Hunt of NJ Advance Media, he averaged 8.0 yards per carry last season, as well as registering 47 tackles and an interception. Hunt stated Salaam was recruited to Rutgers as a running back and cornerback, as well as having a lot of potential as a returner on special teams. Running backs coach Augie Hoffman was the lead recruiter for Salaam.

Speed has been lacking on the Rutgers roster for a long time and head coach Greg Schiano is prioritizing that trait in his staff’s recruiting. The fact that Salaam is a potential contributor in all three phases of the game makes him a versatile pickup as well. The 2021 recruiting class as of now includes four 3-star recruits in the top 22 of New Jersey in cornerback Alijah Clark, wide receiver Carnell Davis, Shaquan Loyal and Salaam, as well as 3-star athlete Kyonte Hamilton from Maryland. (Note: Hamilton is also an elite wrestler and committed to Scott Goodale as well, as he plans to play both sports at Rutgers). 247 Sports currently ranks Rutgers’ 2021 class as 18th best in the nation and 6th in the Big Ten.
