Arella Guirantes named to Wooden Award Watch List

The Rutgers star enters this season as one of the best players in the nation.

Rutgers guard Arella Guirantes was one of 30 named to the Wooden Award Watch List on Tuesday, which is given annually to the nation’s top college basketball player.

Guirantes led the way in the season opening win over Monmouth with a complete performance, finishing with 22 points on 7 of 13 shooting, as well as 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals and 3 blocked shots. She entered this season a the Big Ten Coaches Preseason Co-Player of the Year. In addition, she was named one of 20 players named to the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award Watch List for the nation’s top shooting guard.

Last season, Guirantes was named a First Team All-Big Ten selection by the coaches and media, in addition to being named an All-America Honorable Mention selection by multiple outlets. In 18 Big Ten regular season contests, Guirantes finished second in scoring, third in free throw shooting percentage, sixth in steals, ninth in blocks, twelfth in three-point shooting and 19th in rebounds. Her 20.6 scoring average overall last season was ninth best in the country.

The Rutgers women’s basketball team doesn’t have any additional non-conference games announced yet and are scheduled to begin Big Ten play at Wisconsin on December 11.
