Sammy Alvarez Highlights Rutgers at Southern Scuffle as Champion

The True Freshman Took 1st at 133, Four Others Place Top Eight

Rutgers Athletics

Sammy Alvarez sent the college wrestling world ablaze when the No. 13 ranked wrestler knocked off No. 4 Micky Phillippi of Pittsburgh.

But he wasn’t done. The true freshman took out North Dakota State’s Cam Sykora (No. 8) 5-4 to win the 133 pound crown at the prestigious Southern Scuffle. Alvarez is now 6-0 against ranked opponents in his inaugural campaign.

In the biggest run of his career, Alvarez will surely soar into the Top 10, if not Top Eight in the next set of rankings from Flo Wrestling. Usually being in the Top Eight of any ranking service means you are looked at as a potential All-American in March. Alvarez and All-American sounds pretty good right?

The Scarlet Knights also featured four other place winners as Jordan Pagano and Brett Donner finished 7th, while Nico Aguilar and Mike Van Brill finished 8th. Overall, Rutgers finished 7th as a team with 84 points. Full team tournament results can be found here.

A few notes:

-Aguilar was seeded No. 2 so he unfortunately did match his seed. However, he wrestled real well at times and should still stay in the Top 15 in the next round of rankings at 125.

-An earned podium finish for Van Brill who has been adjusting to his new weight this season.

-Good on Donner to finish on the podium. The 165 pound weight class seems to still be up in the air between Donner and true freshman Jackson Turley. Right now, advantage Donner.

-Pagano finished on the podium while Correnti did not. Like above, advantage Pagano but this weight class will be closely monitored.
