The no. 19 Rutgers field hockey team earned it’s first weekly honor of the 2019 season from the Big Ten on Tuesday, as redshirt senior Austyn Cuneo was named the conference’s Offensive Player of the Week. She was a big reason why the Scarlet Knights began their campaign with a 2-0 start.
Cuneo led Rutgers with eight points in two victories to open the new season last weekend. She scored two goals and added an assist in the 3-0 victory over no. 24 Maine, before scoring one goal and dishing out another assist the following day in a 4-1 win over Ball State. She currently leads the Big Ten in total points and is tied for the lead in goals. Cuneo is the first Rutgers player to earn the Big Ten weekly honor since Daphne Groothuis was selected last season.
In her 39 game career at Rutgers so far, Cuneo has scored 14 goals and produced 9 assists for 37 total points. She is off to a tremendous start in her senior campaign after being named one of three Scarlet Knights as players to watch this season in the Big Ten.
Rutgers is back in action this Friday on the road against no. 4 UConn, which is a rematch of last season’s NCAA Tournament first round contest.
