Gerard Angelo to Transfer to Rutgers Wrestling

Former Bergen Catholic product, NJ State Champ, will be redshirt freshman at Rutgers

FloSports: FloWrestling Best of the East Patrick McDermott-USA TODAY Sports

Gerard Angelo is a former New Jersey State champion. He’s coming back home.

After originally committing to Cornell as a member of the 2018 recruiting class, Angelo instead wrestled for the Finger Lakes Wrestling Club in New York and competed on his own in open tournaments, finishing 8-8 at 149 pounds.

As he transfers to Rutgers, he will be a redshirt freshman, so he will still have four seasons to compete at the varsity level. A medical redshirt could still be in play if necessary.

Angelo projects as a 149/157 pounder. It will remain to be seen where he fits in the lineup moving forward, but talent is talent. Rutgers has always been crowded at the lower and middle weights, but Angelo is a guy recruited by fellow powerhouse Cornell, so we’ll be on the look out on how he develops.

Since 149 is open due to Anthony Ashnault’s graduation, Angelo could remain there and compete for the open spot.

Additional Notes:

According to James Kratch of NJ Advance Media, Rutgers will host LIU in a season opening quad meet on November 2nd in Piscataway. The meet will also feature Division III programs Centenary and Stevens Institute of Technology.

Also, we at On The Banks wish Anthony Ashnault a happy birthday!
