The beat goes on for the two hammers.
Nick Suriano and Anthony Ashnault punched their tickets to the quarterfinals with dominating and controlling wins. They are now both one win away from becoming All-Americans and three wins away from a National Title.
Championship 2nd Round
133: No. 3 Nick Suriano
Result: Win by Decision 7-2 over No. 14 Korbin Myers (Virginia Tech)
-Suriano gave up an early takedown but fought back with an escape and takedown to close out the first period. It was then all Suriano with a reversal, escape and ride-out. This is a great version of Suriano.
He will have a rematch with Minnesota’s No. 6 Ethan Lizak whom he dominated in the Big Tournament in tomorrow’s quarterfinal. One more win and Suriano will be an All-American for the second straight season.
149: No. 1 Anthony Ashnault
Result: Win by Decision 7-1 over No. 16 Davion Jeffries (Oklahoma)
-Ashnault was dominant again with a takedown and nasty arm-bar tilt. He amassed nearly four minutes of riding time as he continues to roll through the bracket.
Ashnault will take on No. 8 Jarrett Degen of Iowa State in the quarterfinals tomorrow morning. One more victory and Ashnault will be the first 4x All-American in Rutgers history.
157: No. 16 John Van Brill
Result: Lost by Tech Fall 19-4 to No. 1 Jason Nolf (Penn State)
-It was a tough go ‘round for Van Brill this time. Nolf seemingly remember he was hurt vs. Van Brill last season and took out his anger in this round. There wasn’t much Van Brill could do on Thursday night.
Van Brill will wrestle in the 2nd round of wrestle-backs and take on No. 18 Logan Parks of Central Michigan.
Wrestle-back First Round
141: No. 33 Pete Lipari
Result: Loss by Pin (5:35) to No. 17 Ian Parker (Iowa State)
-Lipari went for it early but was taken down and was turned for an early 6-0 hole. In the third period, Lipari went for a throw but was caught and put to his back. With the loss, Lipari was eliminated from the tournament. He finished his NCAA stint with a 1-2 record.
174: No. 29 Joe Grello
Result: Win by Major Decision 10-1 over No. 13 Britt Wilson (Northern Illinois)
-Grello made a statement in his second match of the day. he earned four takedowns en route to a major decision and looked sharp all seven minutes. One of the best matches we’ve seen from Grello all season.
He will take on No. 14 Kimball Bastian of Utah Valley in the second round of wrestle backs tomorrow morning.
184: No. 21 Nick Gravina
Result: Loss by Decision 6-4 to No. 28 Noah Stewart (Army)
I’ll let my tweet explain. A heartbreaker.
Oh my goodness. A wild flurry. Gravina gets a takedown, gets reversed and gives up two backs, gets a reversal of his own to tie it 4-4. But because of the riding time, Gravina cut Stewart loose and could not finish. He loses 6-4. His season and wonderful #Rutgers career is over.— Nick Kosko (@nickkosko59) March 22, 2019
