Rutgers Takes Down Maryland 28-11

Scarlet Knights get two Pins, Roll Over Terps

Dustin Satloff/Rutgers Athletics

Rutgers defeated Maryland 28-11 in front of an energetic crowd at the RAC. Here’s a recap from me and Mike Antosiewicz and observations from the night! You can look at the full match results here!

Aguilar Creates an Explosion

Nico Aguilar made his home debut for the Scarlet Knights with an emphatic pin in the second period over Maryland’s Brandon Cray. It was great to see Aguilar, who came in to the night with a 10-1 record, make his home debut after giving way to Malcolm Robinson for the season opening quad meet.

Aragona Slowed by Hamstring Injury

JoJo Aragona won his match, but was ridden out for an entire period, probably due to his hamstring issue. Head coach Scott Goodale said after the match that it is an issue but they have time to rectify it before the Southern Scuffle on January 1st.

Angelo Solidifying the 149 lb. Weight Class

Gerard Angelo was filling in for the injured Nick Santos, but is taking ownership of this weight class. He ended his night with a pin, the second of the night, and looks very dangerous.

Grello Knocks off Ranked Foe

Joe Grello was on the verge of a breakout season last year as he qualified and went 2-2 at NCAA’s last year. Now ranked at No. 13, Grello took on No. 16 Phil Spadafora and edged him 3-2. It was a nice win from Grello who typically wrestles all ranked opponents very close, so it was nice to him come out on top. He’s now 3-0 on the season.
