Rutgers Wrestling December Rankings Update

Six Wrestlers Ranked, Two in Top Ten

Rutgers Athletics

The latest NCAA Division 1 Wrestling Rankings are out and Flo Wrestlings latest batch features six Scarlet Knights ranked in the Top 25 of their respective weight classes.

No. 10 RS-Fr. Nico Aguilar (125)

No. 10 RS-Jr. Joe Grello (174)

No. 13 Fr. Sammy Alvarez (133)

No. 15 Gr. Sr. Jordan Pagano (197)

No. 23 RS-Fr. Gerard Angelo (149)

No. 23 RS-Sr. Christian Colucci (HWT)

All of these rankings are according to Flo Wrestling.

After Saturday night’s win over Maryland, Rutgers moved to 6-0 on the season for the first time since the 2014-15 campaign. Not bad for a rebuilding/developmental year for the team huh?

A few notes on the rankings:

Aguilar is soaring

After earning a pin in Saturday’s dual vs. Maryland, Aguilar improved to 11-1 on the season, with his only loss coming to Princeton’s No. 3 Pat Glory, who is a returning All-American. He has locked down the 125 pound weight class on this roster and is showing a tremendous improvement in strength and speed compared to his redshirt year.

Grello Approaching All-American Contender Status

Grello went 2-2 at NCAA’s last season and as a redshirt junior, is due for a podium run. He jumps three spots to No. 10 at 174 after a win over Phillip Spadafora, who fell from No. 16 to 18. Despite being pegged as a top ten wrestler in the country, Grello ranks out to No. 7 just in the Big Ten. Conference duals will be huge for seeding and qualification resumes for NCAA’s in Minnesota.

Pagano Does NOT Free Fall

It was a shocking defeat by pin over the weekend as Pagano was caught vs. Jaron Smith. He only falls two spots to No. 15 at 197 pounds. Sometimes, you just have an off day, but Pagano is a solid 9-2 on the season and has Matt Correnti pushing him on the depth chart. Both are former NCAA qualifiers so a change could be made if necessary, but Pagano has looked healthy all season and much improved over the last two seasons.
