With the news that Rutgers is hiring Greg Schiano as head coach of the football program, athletic director Pat Hobbs issued a statement on Sunday that stated the following:
“The next great chapter for Rutgers Football is about to begin.”
“There are many people to thank for where we are today, particularly Coach Schiano and his team, as well as everyone here at Rutgers. They all played important roles in bringing these complex negotiations to a close.”
“It wouldn’t be appropriate to prejudge any action that the Board of Governors may take, but I believe today that Rutgers Football is on the path to greatness.”
While the search was a roller coaster ride that included talks with Schiano breaking off last week, ultimately the candidate that presented Rutgers with the best chance towards respectability in the quickest time frame was hired.
Much can be speculated about how the dynamic between Hobbs and Schiano will ultimately be in the future, but for today the end result is that the program has a new leader, but one who has rebuilt Rutgers football in the past and is tasked with doing so once again.
