REPORT: A transfer for Rutgers Wrestling adds depth to lineup

Lehigh heavyweight looking to move to Rutgers

A 2015 NJSIAA champion is transferring to Rutgers, according to a tweet from the athlete himself.

Christian Colucci took the 220 pound state title in 2015 while at St.Peter’s Prep. He’s spent the last three years at Lehigh where he was 20-6 over two seasons (two years wrestling with what appears two years of eligibility left).

At St. Peter’s he put together a 112-25 record including three Region 4 titles and three District 16 titles. In his senior year, he was the Hudson County Wrestler of the Year and Scholar-Athlete of the Year. His decision to go to Lehigh was, according to the Lehigh website, for the “The prestigious academics and the competitive wrestling program.”

Not getting as much time on the mat this year is likely a reason for the move back across the Delaware.

The upper weights were a weak area for the Knights this past season, despite gutsy efforts by Razohnn Gross and Ralph Normandia. Colucci would add depth and serious competition at the top weight. Matt Correnti redshirted this year and could have moved up to heavyweight but now could stay at 197.

Below is video of Colucci’s 3-1 victory over Marc McDonald of West Essex in the 2015 state championship.
