Mitchell previously prepped at Mater Dei in Middletown, New Jersey and played the past year at Butler Community College in Kansas. He had 50 tackles, 2 sacks and 1 interception in 11 games played, per the site for the KJCCC (Kansas Jayhawks Community College Conference).
He also previously played at New Milford Academy in New Berlin, NY before going the JUCO route. He is good friends with Rutgers wide receiver Eddie Lewis, who he has played with off and on since middle school, including at Mater Dei and New Milford. His family lives in Somerset, New Jersey.
Mitchell committed to Rutgers this past weekend while on his official visit and soon after receiving an offer from the program.
The inside linebacker is 6’2” and listed at 220 pounds. Mitchell has four years to play three and is expected to enroll at Rutgers for the spring semester. Mitchell has good size and has good closing speed when in pursuit of the opposition. He’ll have a chance to play right away next season with the departures of seniors Deonte Roberts and Trevor Morris.
Per 247 Sports, Mitchell was rated a 3-star prospect and held offered from New Mexico and Old Dominion in addition to Rutgers, as well as receiving interest from Kentucky, Louisville, and Maryland. Todderick Hunt also reported Florida, Texas Tech and Nebraska as schools that were showing interest as well.
Mitchell brings much needed depth at the linebacker position for Rutgers. Chris Ash now has 13 players verbally committed at the moment with the early signing period just one month away. Per 247 Sports, the current 2019 class is ranked 13th in the Big Ten and 66th of all FBS schools.
Here are highlights of Mitchell from this past season at Butler CC.
