Eastern Michigan SB Nation site: The Hustle Belt Game Preview
Here we are, Labor Day is in the rear view mirror and the second game of the season is upon us. Rutgers hosts Eastern Michigan from the MAC and teams from that conference are never an easy out. The Scarlet Knights MUST avoid a letdown after playing above expectations last weekend against a top ten team in Washington. With a current ten game losing streak, the program just needs to come up with a win any way they can today.
The play of both offensive and defensive lines in the season opener give hope that those units are much improved this year. If that’s the case, they need to dominate in the trenches on both sides of the ball in this game.
Fans are clamoring for the offense to open things up a bit in the passing game and I think we will see Rutgers take a few shots downfield today. However, I think offensive coordinator Jerry Kill will happily look to primarily pound the ball with the run game. Gus Edwards and Robert Martin could be a potent 1-2 punch out of the backfield this season, so today is important for them to assert themselves in this game.
On defense, Rutgers needs to contain the big play capability of EMU quarterback Brogan Roback, who will be hoping to lead the upset with a big day through the air. The defense needs to produce takeaways in this game and put pressure on Roback through the pass rush, early and often.
As for special teams, let’s hope they show improvement from last week and put together a competent performance.
Join us in the comments during the game and let’s hope we all have a fun day! RU rah rah!
