Freshman walk-on kicker Jared Smolar announced on his twitter account last night that he decided to part ways with Rutgers. His statement is below:

Smolar started the 2016 season handling kickoffs, but after registering zero touchbacks in 21 attempts, he was replaced by David Bonagura, who also handled field goals and extra point attempts. Bonagura made 10 of 14 field goal attempts and 20 of 22 extra point tries during the 2016 season.
With Bonagura sidelined due to injury this past spring, it gave Smolar an opportunity to prove what he could do. Instead, Gavin Haggerty outperformed Smolar during the spring, capped off by him making all three field goal attempts in the Scarlet-White game. With incoming freshman Justin Davidovicz arriving this summer, it was likely Smolar would end up fourth on the depth chart.
Good luck to Jared Smolar on his next journey.
