National Signing Day brought some mild surprises, a couple of disappointments, and mostly, pretty much what we expected from the 2017 recruiting class for Rutgers Football. Head Coach Chris Ash has now inked his second class
Here is a quick breakdown:
- Four Early Enrollee's
- One Grad Transfer
- Three 4-star commits
- Twenty-one 3-star commits
- PWO Kicker & PWO Division III All-American Punter
- 247 Composite Ranking of 42nd nationally & 9th in Big Ten
It should be noted this class is ranked the highest for Rutgers Football since the 2012 class, which was kept together at the last minute with the hiring of Kyle Flood as head coach. He replaced Greg Schiano after he was hired by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, only days before national signing day. Ash did this after a 2-10 debut and several blowout losses.
I can tell you I am voting a B for this class. While there aren't a lot of flashy names or 4-star recruits, Ash hauled in a well-rounded group that are predominantly 3- star recruits. Finishing in the middle of the pack of the Big Ten rankings isn't the goal, but it's steady improvement from recent years. Ash has preached the importance of player development and this class will go a long way in proving whether he and his staff are truly strong in that area or not.
