Rutgers Announces MidKnight Madness For Men’s & Women’s Basketball

NCAA Basketball: George Washington at Rutgers Jim O'Connor-USA TODAY Sports

For the first time in several years, Rutgers will host an event to celebrate the beginning of the college basketball season. Rutgers is calling it “MidKnight Madness”!

It is free and open to the public, which along with the timing, makes this a great event for families with children. Although it’s not at a later hour, like when many college basketball programs hold this type of event, I think it’s the right move. Also, holding a joint event for both the men’s and women’s programs is smart as well. We are Big Ten now, let’s act like it with more promotional events for all of our programs!

At MidKnight Madness, there will be a dunk contest for the men’s team, skills competitions, and both the cheer and dance squads will be there as well. Also, one student will have a chance to win a car valued at $20,000 by making a halfcourt shot. Free t-shirts will be handed out to a certain number of attendees.

In regards to the men’s team, half of the roster is new to the program, so this is a great way for fans to see the newcomers for the first time. Keep an eye out for Nigel Johnson, who I think will be the best of the newbies this season. The women’s team has a lot of new players on the team too. Of course, it will also be fans first chance to see new men’s head coach Steve Pikiell and the rest of his staff.

Let’s get out to this great event on the first Friday in October and give our programs the support they deserve.

In case there was any doubt, our own Dave White is very excited about this idea.
