The Big Ten announced their weekly honors for Olympic Sports today and Rutgers athletes picked up two honors.

Women’s soccer midfielder Nicole Whitley was honored as co-Freshman of the Week for her game winning goal in the conference opener against Maryland last Friday. Whitney has started every game this season and is off to a great beginning to her Rutgers career. She currently is tied for the team lead for points with 10 on the season with senior forward Madison Tiernan. Whitley also leads the Big Ten with 6 assists.

The team is currently 6-1-1 overall and ranked #22 in the country by the NSCAA. They host a pair of conference games this weekend. On Friday, Rutgers takes on #21 Northwestern at Yurcak Field at 5:30 p.m. The Wildcats are 9-0 on the season and own wins over Big Ten foes Indiana and Purdue. On Sunday, Rutgers hosts Illinois at Yurcak Field at 1:00 p.m, who are 3-7 on the season and 0-2 in conference play. Both games can be seen live on BTN Plus.

Congratulations to Nicole on the first Big Ten weekly honor of her career and the first for the program this season.

The Rutgers field hockey team also picked up a weekly honor today, as Katie Larmour was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week. Larmour scored two goals in her squad’s 13-0 victory over Siena on Sunday. The midfielder from Ireland has three goals and two assists for the season through seven games. Last week, Rutgers forward Nikki Santore was named Freshman of the Week, so the program has won the award in two consecutive weeks. Santore was also named Offensive Player of the Week for her efforts and for more details, click here.

The field hockey team is now 5-2 on the season and they take on Big Ten opponent Indiana this coming Friday. For more details on field hockey and the rest of the Rutgers fall Olympic sports teams, click here.
