Rutgers shuts out #10 UCONN on Sunday

The #22 Rutgers women’s soccer team took on #10 UCONN on Sunday afternoon at the University of Connecticut. Rutgers was able to put up a clean sheet against UCONN for their second shutout of the season. Rutgers won 2-0 and continue their winning streak through the weekend. Rutgers improves to (3-0-1) on the season, while UCONN falls to (3-1). The two goals for Rutgers were both scored in the opening half.

In the 24th minute, Madison Tiernan scored the first goal for the Scarlet Knights on a corner kick served up by Nicole Whitley. This was Whitley’s third assist this season. That was Tiernan’s second goal on the season, she currently leads the team in points. Later in the 32nd minute, Rutgers scored on another corner kick, this one by Brittany LaPlant. This was LaPlant's second goal on the season for Rutgers.  The corner shot was sent into LaPlant by Sophmore Kenie Wright.

Goalkeeper Alana Jimenez looked great in the shutout for Rutgers. She had six saves on the day and her second shutout of the weekend. Although UCONN out shot Rutgers 22-9, it was Jimenez’s performance that allowed Rutgers to get the win.

This was the third time in a row that Rutgers has beaten UCONN, bring the all-time record to (16-5-4) in favor of UCONN.  Rutgers will return home for a long stay of home matches, beginning on Friday, September 2, against Georgetown. Rutgers will not have another away game until September 29th when they travel to the University of Michigan to take on the Wolverines.  For the Full Schedule check here.

The women jumped up quite a bit in the rankings after the win over UCONN, climbing back into the top ten!
