Rutgers Women's Soccer Head Coach Mike O'Neill Named Top 10 in the Country

Joe Maiorana-USA TODAY Sports

The Rutgers women’s soccer team has started the season with the highest preseason ranking that they have ever received, and it shows highly on their head coach.  Head Coach Mike O’Neill has been recognized by TopDrawerSoccer.com as one of the top 10 head coaches in the country.  He is in his third season as the head coach of the Scarlet Knights, and has led the team to multiple NCAA Tournaments, and also the Women’s College Cup last year.  He is hoping to repeat the record setting campaign that the team had last year and end this season on top.

O’Neill has been with Rutgers for 16 years, starting as an assistant coach in 2000, before moving to associate head coach in 2004.  He served in the associate head coach role until he was promoted to head coach in 2014.  Since being named the head coach the team has done nothing but improve every year.  He led the team to a record breaking year in 2015 in which the team lead the NCAA in goals, as well as shutouts, and shutout averages.

The Scarlet Knights have a very tough schedule ahead of them, including this weekend, beginning with Saint Joseph’s on Friday at home, and ending with an away match against #10 UCONN of Sunday.  After beginning the season with a win over Rider University, and a draw in the home opener against Providence University, Rutgers has dropped to #22 in the rankings.  The team will be looking to move past these two tough opponents and work their way back up the rankings next week.  Look here for a full schedule for the Rutgers women’s soccer team.
