The Scarlet Knights have now played two games in the 2016 season. After winning their opening match on Friday at Rider University, Rutgers came back to RU to host Providence University in the home opener. This game took place on Sunday Afternoon at Yurcak field. The ladies of the Rutgers women's soccer team did not look as composed as they did in the 4-1 win over Rider just two days before.
Rutgers had a little trouble converting their shots into goals, despite out-shooting Providence 24-4. Their only goal of the game for Rutgers was off the leg of Freshman Brittany LaPlant. That was the first goal for LaPlant since joining the Scarlet Knights. That goal came in the 34th minute, and was assisted by senior Jennifer Andresen who sent in a corner kick toward LaPlant.
Providence was able to retaliate in the 82nd minute when they received a penalty kick and capitalized on the opportunity. Senior goalkeeper Alana Jimenez got the start again for Rutgers and had one save on the day. The game went to extra time, but neither team was able to score. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, which brings the all-time record between these two teams to 14-2-1 in favor of RU.
Rutgers will continue to practice and improve this week in hopes to rally back in the next match that is set for Friday, August 26. That game is home against St. Joseph's at 5:30 ET at Yurcak field. Following that the Scarlet Knights have an away game vs. the University of Connecticut on Sunday, August 28, at 1pm. Click here for the full schedule.
