Rutgers Football Holds Open Practice Today

NCAA Football: Maryland at Rutgers Ed Mulholland-USA TODAY Sports

The Rutgers football team will hold an open practice for the public today, with the gates opening at 3:30 p.m. It will be a full scrimmage and held on field F3 across from the Rutgers Visitor Center. Parking is available in the white and yellow lots. Fans can greet the team at the main entrance of the white lot, as they enter the practice field.

The scrimmage will be a big test for many players on the roster and a great opportunity for fans to see the team in action for the first time under first year head coach Chris Ash. The quarterback battle will be one to watch for, as Chris Laviano and Zach Allen have emerged as the top two contenders to start this season. Also, it will be the first look fans have of the newly installed spread offense by coordinator Drew Mehringer.

Another thing to watch for is how the defense performs in their scimmage debut under new coordinator Jay Niemann. In this video after practice earlier this week, projected starting linebackers Deonte Roberts, Trevor Morris, and Najee Clayton spoke about how much they have learned from the veteran coach, as well as from Ash. Today will be a big test for the three players, who are trying to solidfy their starting positions.

The BTN crew was at practice yesterday and had a lot of positive things to say about what they saw on the field. Hopefully, after a long first week of practice in very hot and humid conditions, the team will continue to play well in front of the fans. Hopefully, a large number of fans attend.

We are just three weeks away from the season opener against #18 Washington in Seattle. If you go to the scrimmage today, stay hydrated and protect yourself from the sun. But most importantly, have fun!
