30 Reasons for 30 Days - Day 21: Stadium Promotions

From now through September 3rd, I am posting a daily reason why it is great to be a fan of Rutgers football. There are a lot more than thirty, but I picked my thirty reasons, and hope you like them. If not, be sure to let me know.

Every year, there are giveaways that you receive if you are early to the stadium. Some of them are great, some are not so great, but all are prized. They range from the sublime (I actually have a couple in my house) to the ridiculous (what do I do with a red foam rectangle with white letters on it?)

However, it is one of the fun things about going to the stadium. Some are limited supply, and are only given to the first 5,000 or first 10,000 to enter the stadium. Those are usually the better ones, such as the Scarlet Knight bobblehead doll given out two years ago. The one below currently sits on the mantle in my family room, across from the picture of the first B1G game against Penn State.

Others are momentos that show “I was there” for iconic moments in Rutgers history, like the black “rally towels” given out on October 8, 2014, the night Rutgers beat Michigan for their first-ever Big Ten victory.

Some may lose their value depending upon the year, such as the Kyle Flood bobblehead doll, but may increase in value as the years roll along.

These moments hold a special place in lots of the Scarlet Knight Faithful’s homes.

Some of the are older, like this Rutgers/Pepsi promotion. The age of this is shown by the fact that Rutgers now is affiliated with Coke, not Pepsi.

What will be given away this year? This is often a closely guarded secret, but who knows? Perhaps a Chris Ash Bobblehead? The Scarlet Knight on his horse? I guess we will see.

So, the tchotchke that are given are fun, silly, ridiculous, and collectable. After all, someday, your child may have a visit from the Big Ten Treasure Hunter and make a killing, because you refused to throw your collection away, much to the chagrin of a long-suffering spouse.

And that is today’s reason why it is great to be a Rutgers football fan. I hope you’re enjoying this series. Let me know!
