Darius Hamilton Named To Outland Trophy Watch List

Jerry Lai-USA TODAY Sports

Fifth-year senior defensive tackle Darius Hamilton was named to the Outland Trophy Watch List today. It is awarded annually to the top interior lineman in college football. Nominees include both offensive and defensive lineman. 70 players were named and you can view the full watch list here.

Hamilton was one of 17 defensive lineman nominated for the Outland Trophy. He is one of 7 players who were named to both the Outland Trophy Watch List and the Bednarik Award Watch List, which we covered here.

The Big Ten had 11 players nominated for the Outland Trophy, with just fellow defensive lineman Malik McDowell from Michigan State and Jake Replogle from Purdue joining Hamilton on both Award Watch Lists. The Big Ten had the second most players nominated for the Outland Trophy, trailing the SEC by one.

The six or seven semifinalist's for the award will be named on November 17th. The three finalists will be announced on November 22nd, with the winner being named on December 8th.

It is great to see Hamilton nominated for both the Outland Trophy and the Bednarik Award after missing all but one game last season. He was the defensive MVP for Rutgers in 2014 and was named Honorable Mention All-Big Ten by the media.  Entering his final season on the banks, Hamilton has accumulated 110 tackles, 10.5 sacks, and 24.5 tackles for a loss in his career. The former 5-star recruit and Don Bosco Prep star has been working hard to prepare for his senior season.

Hamilton is expected to be fully healthy for the start of training camp in August and is primed to have a monster senior season. He is likely to be named captain for the third time in his career and was one of three players named to attend Big Ten media days later this month.
