The title of NCAA Athlete of the year is a prestigious title previously held by some of the most recognized names in sports history. Two of Rutgers University's finest have been nominated for this great honor. Seniors Gabrielle Farquharson (Track and Field), and Brianne Reed (Women's Soccer) have been chosen by the school. The title of Athlete of the Year is to honor the achievements, both academically and athletically of these exceptional students. Students who show excellence in community service and leadership and are graduating college athletes from Division I, II,and III schools are eligible for nomination. They are among a total of 517 athletes nominated.
Gabrielle Farquharson most recently placed three times All American at the NCAA Track and Field Outdoor Championships. She competed in the 100m, 200m, and long jump, with finishes of 13th, 10th, and 7th respectively. She was twice a Big Ten Champion, and was named Mid Atlantic Track Athlete of the Year by the US Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Assosiation (USTFCCCA) this past month. As an Indoor Track athlete she was equally as impressive, with at Big Ten win in the 200m. This earned her another All-American title. Farquharson has also qualified for a spot in the US Olympic trials in long jump taking place from July 1-10. She will be looking to earn a a spot on the Olympic team and head to Rio this summer.
Brianna Reed has started for Rutgers at center back for three years straight. She was named a 2014 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All American. In Addition to this great honor, she won the Big Ten Medal of Honor in 2016. Following an amazing career with the Scarlet Knights, where she helped her team to several NCAA Tournaments, she went on to be drafted in the National Women's Soccer League 2016 Draft. She was drafted 18th overall by FC KAnsas City.
