Report: Rutgers Basketball Forward D.J. Foreman To Transfer

Earlier this week, reserve guard Justin Goode was reportedly transferring. Yesterday, Rutgers basketball star Corey Sanders announced he was declaring for the NBA Draft but was not signing with an agent. Today comes this report.

Foreman averaged 7.9 points per game this past season and led Rutgers in rebounding with 6.0 boards per game. He played 26.2 minutes per game, shot a solid 47.9% from the field but a disappointing 56% from the free throw line. Foreman was the only frontcourt player on the team not to miss a game this past season due to injury.  He scored in double digits in 13 games but had just one double-double all season, scoring 13 points and pulling in 11 rebounds in a February loss at Minnesota.  Overall, Foreman had his moments and was steady yet unspectacular for the majority of his career at Rutgers.

With the loss of Foreman, that leaves new Rutgers coach Steve Pikiell with just six returning scholarship players as of today.  The frontcourt players set to return for now are Jonathan Laurent, Ibrahima Diallo and Shaq Doorson, as well as junior Deshawn Freeman.  Freeman should have two years of eligibility left after playing less than 10 games this season and is eligible for a medical redshirt.  The returning backcourt players include Mike Williams and Kansas State transfer Nigel Johnson. We will not know until the May 25th deadline for droping out of the NBA Draft as to whether Corey Sanders will return or not.

Coach Pikiell has a lot of work to do in rebuilding the roster, but gained a huge boost yesterday in hiring UConn assistant Karl Hobbs. They will be hard at work to reshape the roster as Pikiell continues to work on filling his one open assistant position. Currently with three commitments in the class of 2016, that leaves now four open scholarships for next season as of today.
