NSD: QB Tylin Oden Signs!

Tennessee-native QB Tylin Oden officially joined Rutgers on Wednesday, signing his National Letter of Intent to join the Scarlet Knights.

Oden is one of the most talked about players of this class, as so much fuss was made over the QB situation after Anthony Russo flipped to Temple. However, new head coach Chris Ash and his staff searched far and wide for a dual threat QB to fit OC Drew Mehringer's offense, and ultimately landed 6-5, 180 Oden.

Oden originally committed to Louisville last May, but didn't stay with the Cardinals very long, as he decommitted in July. After receiving an offer from Rutgers on January 13, he announced his decision to join the Scarlet Knights on January 27. In addition to Rutgers and Louisville, Oden held offers from Tennessee, West Virginia, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, and others.

Oden's best qualities are his height and his speed. At 6-5, Oden definitely has the height to be a solid quarterback at the collegiate level. He ties Mike Dare as the tallest quarterback on Rutgers' roster. He also has great speed, and is a true dual threat quarterback and who can move in the pocket, scramble for big gains and make defenses look silly on designed runs.

The Spring Hill High School signal caller has a couple areas he could work on. His arm strength is decent, but he doesn't quite have a cannon. Perhaps Rutgers coaches can help him build arm strength to become an even more powerful passer. And despite being a towering 6-5, he weighs just 180 pounds. He'll likely need to bulk up to keep from getting pushed around by Big Ten defenses.

Freshman Impact Index: 2 - With Chris Laviano and Hayden Rettig still on the roster, expect Ash to go with one of the quarterbacks with in-game experience to start the 2016 season. Oden is a strong prospect, but his arm strength and build need to be worked on, so he should spend the upcoming season learning and improving his game. While Oden may not start as a true freshman, there's a very good chance he's Rutgers' QB of the future.
