Back in June, I posed the question of whether Rutgers should honor the 2006 football team that changed the trajectory of the program forever. It received mixed reactions and some great comments on both sides of the argument. One strong reaction was the undefeated 1976 team must be honored first before recognizing the 2006 team. Alas, in September it was announced by Rutgers that they were in fact planning to honor both teams in the final month of this football season.
Today, the 2006 team will be honored at halftime and let’s hope their presence brings a little extra juice to both our current team and the environment at the Point today. To read my full thoughts on that team and what it meant to the program, as well as the results to our reader poll, click here.
This is a huge game for head coach Chris Ash. Indiana enters at 4-4 and the new coaching staff is still searching for their first win in Big Ten conference play. A win today could spark a strong finish to the season, with Michigan State up next and owning an identical 2-6 record and 0-5 in the conference to Rutgers. Any chance of competing against Penn State (6-2) and Maryland (5-3) starts with a winning performance today.
Indiana has the 3rd ranked offense in the Big Ten, trailing only Michigan and Ohio State. Any chance of Rutgers winning starts with a strong performance by the defense and a relentless ground attack on the offense. You know, basically their best impression of the 2006 team! Let’s hope for a fun day on the banks that ends in victory!
