The legend of CJ Gettys Grows: Gettys was a beast tonight. He scored 13 points and landed 9 rebounds—almost a double double. But, more than that, was his attitude. He plays confidently and knew no one on the court could touch him. Plus he has a sweet touch from the free throw line. That sort of small thing can play big dividends even in league play. The game turned on his attitude on the court.
This isn’t an Eddie Jordan team: Rutgers was locked in all night. They competed on the defensive end, they fought for rebounds (FIFTY SIX?) and shut down Drexel every time they needed a run. In all honesty, a Jordan team probably wins this game last year, but totally blows the 21 point lead and has to hang on in a nailbiter. Pikiell’s teams are prepared.
Deshawn Freeman Double Double: I felt Freeman was quiet tonight, and then I’m in the car on the way home and hear his has a double double. Sure he can cut down on his fouls and turnovers, but not everyone is in mid-season form. Freeman has been a steadying force this year and Rutgers is looking for him on offense. That’s huge.
Maybe this team can shoot a little? I don’t expect them to be lights out from beyond the arc, but they have to be competent. Tonight they were with Issa Thiam, Jonathan Laurent and even Candido Sa making them pay. If you have to guard the perimeter, it opens things up for Freeman and teams won’t pack it in against the zone. Gives you more options.
