Rutgers Football Commit Analysis: Elorm Lumor

Chris Ash reinforced "fencing the garden" by landing their first commit from Rutgers own backyard.

It was announced Thursday night that 3-star linebacker Elorm Lumor, the former Piscataway high school star, flipped his commitment from Temple to Rutgers and is enrolling early this week for the spring semester.  It was quite a pickup for head coach Chris Ash and his staff, as Lumor was considered a hard commit to Temple and was planning to enroll there early instead. Ash's background and the allure of playing at home were the keys in his change of heart. Lumor said in Ryan Dunleavy's article, "The thing is that he is used to be the defensive coordinator at one of my dream schools. That was a big reason. I believe in his philosophy and what he was saying about wanting to turn us around and make us a contender in the Big Ten." He also added, "It means a lot to have the chance to put on for my city and have a chance to play in Piscataway at the stadium," Lumor said. "My family will come and see me. It's an honor to play for Coach Ash and this coaching staff."

Lumor is a super athletic defensive player who brings versatility and speed to the program. From his tapes below, you can see his ability to defend against both the pass and the run. His speed off the edge and tackling ability stuck out for me. He is rated the 4th best prep prospect in the country by 247 sports and seems to have a great attitude coming in to play for the new regime.  From Sam Hellman's article, "Wherever they want to put me, I’ll play, but I spoke with them about playing outside linebacker and a little nickel," he said. "I could play outside linebacker, nickel, safety, defensive end, doesn’t matter. Wherever they want me, I’ll play and I’ll play hard."

In terms of the current class, Lumor joins linebackers Jonathan Pollock and Solomon Manning as early enrollees, bringing three players to spring camp for a position of need at linebacker.  With Kaiwan Lewis and Quentin Gause graduating, along with Steve Longa leaving early for the NFL draft, all three starters are gone from that position group from last season.  While there is some returning depth, including Isaiah Johnson and Deonte Roberts, Ash and his staff have made it clear every position is open.  The coaches welcome the players for the start of the spring semester on Tuesday morning at 5 am for a "boot camp" like workout. Not only is Lumor enrolling early, but he has a season of prep school behind him, which could help him move up the depth chart quickly.

Adding Lumor also brings a little bit of consolation, after it appears Temple is close to landing former Rutgers commit and Elite 11 quarterback Anthony Russo. While Temple coaches have been courting Russo, Ash and the Rutgers staff essentially stole Lumor out from under them.  It is quite a coup, considering Lumor was set to enroll at Temple next week.  Regardless, Lumor is an exciting addition to the class of 2016 and bringing him into the fold helps legitimize the "fence the garden" recruiting mantra the new staff have adopted.  The Piscataway native has a bright future on the banks!
