Football Recruiting: Camp Rundown

New, comments

Rutgers hosts the first of its summer camp series tonight. Here's what you need to know.

Ed Mulholland-USA TODAY Sports

Camp season is upon us, and there is lots to talk about.  Skill players camp tonight, and the big boys tomorrow.  Here's what you need to know.

Over/Under 2.5 Commits?

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-cards="hidden" lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Grand Street WRs Taysir Mack and Ahmed Bah both expected to commit to <a href="">#Rutgers</a> Friday <a href="">#CHOPNation</a> <a href="">#RFootball</a> <a href="">#B1G</a> <a href=""></a></p>&mdash; Todderick Hunt (@TodderickHunt) <a href="">June 5, 2015</a></blockquote>

Todderick is reporting the two Brooklyn WRs are pretty much a done deal. That would make the WR position suddenly very tight with possibly only one spot remaining, and might cause some other dominoes to fall. Rutgers will likely hold spots for Ahmir Mitchell or Brad Hawkins as long as necessary, but the music is about to stop for many other players with offers - time to find your seat gentlemen.

Big Names Competing

Seemingly out of the blue, 4* Maryland receiver Trevon Diggs tweeted last night that he would be competing, with a shoutout to Mo Sanu. When Dwayne Haskins chose the Terps, many thought Diggs was a lost cause for RU. As Coach Corso likes to say on Gameday, "Not so fast my friends."

<script async src="//" charset="utf-8"></script>

Recently bumped (by Rivals) 4* WR Kelvin Harmon will also be working out. Harmon has done very well on the camp circuit this spring, earning that fourth star by winning the Rivals MVP at WR, among other things.

<script async src="//" charset="utf-8"></script>

Fred Hansard, one of the top prospects in NJ's class of 2017, will be on hand on Saturday.  It's not clear if he will be working out or simply visiting, but either way, its a positive for Rutges to continue to build that relationship.

Don't be surprised if a few other 4* targets appear in Piscataway either.

Potential New Offers

With 2 of 3 likely linebacker spots filled after Elias Reynolds commitment, that spot is suddenly a high-leverage position group.  PA's Rashawn Battle seems to be Rutgers highest priority remaining LB target, but Colonia's Solomon Manning or could land an offer with an impressive camp performance, setting up a potential race to see which of those two commit first. Rutgers may feel confident enough about landing Battle to hold off on Manning for a while, so it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Another player who could land an offer after a solid camp performance is OT Thomas Lopez, of Middletown South, who has been in close communication with the staff and seemingly close to an offer for a while.
