Rutgers Athletics: The Board of Governors' meeting

New, 13 comments

It has been long awaited. President Barchi is supposed to make a presentation on a master plan for athletics. Well.....

The Star-Ledger-USA TODAY Sports

It's June.  The last Board of Governors meeting of the academic year.

It has been long-anticipated by Rutgers sports fans because it was at this meeting - on June 18 - that University President Robert Barchi was expected to unveil a physical "master plan" for athletics.  To most of us, that meant revealing a sense of what we're going to build and maybe when.

From the article by Keith Sargeant back in April - yes, April and on, of all days, April 1 - Barchi said things should be in place by this Thursday:

"The feasibility study, it has all been done,'' Barchi said. "We're just queueing up the plans to present them to the boards. So we should be finished with this, probably by the June board meeting.''

Well, is it actually on the BoG's agenda?  Maybe.  The agenda was made public today, and it includes the following:

7. MATTERS PRESENTED BY THE PRESIDENT

  • c. Physical Master Plan – Rutgers University-Camden

11. COMMITTEE ON FINANCE AND FACILITIES - June 2, 2015

  • a. Proposed Resolution Approving the 2015 Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey Physical Master Plan

14. COMMITTEE ON INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS – June 17, 2015

For those who were expecting to see an agenda item listing "Spending of tons of money to make Rutgers competitive in the Big Ten", you're going to be a bit disappointed.  Is Barchi's athletic plan included in one of those items above?  Again, maybe.

Some of us, through comments written on this site, are not expecting anything very dramatic in any presentation that comes out.  As I heard an athletic administrator say once, master plans can be pretty boring.  And this one may be, as well.  I don't think we'll hear anything too significant.  Even if it is announced that a plan exists and is being wrapped up to build a basketball practice facility, I won't get too excited because for months that was believed to be a starting point for any development.

Personally, as I indicated back in a February post, I'm pleased that Barchi is at least acknowledging the importance of spending something on athletics.  So I've cleared my calendar for Thursday and I will be at Winants Hall for the BoG meeting.  I'm probably going to bring something to read to keep my interest.  Hope I'm wrong.
