Baseball & Softball showing different patterns

Softball is traveling west and playing .500 ball. Baseball has gone south and played ranked opponents...and it shows.

Softball  (6-6, 0-0 B1G)

Concluding its weekend at the Lobo Classic in Albequerque, the Rutgers softball team defeated host New Mexico, 9-6, on Sunday morning at the Lobo Softball field.

The Scarlet Knights improve to an overall record of 6-6, while the Lobos fall to 12-9. RU ended the tournament with a 2-1 mark.

On Saturday, opening its weekend at the Lobo Classic, the Rutgers softball team split its day, defeating CSU Bakersfield, 9-4, and falling to host New Mexico, 10-5.

Senior Class Award

Rutgers softball senior outfielders Jackie Bates and Chandler Howard have been selected as candidates for the 2015 Senior CLASS Award, it was announced Thursday.  Full story is here.

RU Softball on TV

The Big Ten Network released is 2015 spring softball coverage on Monday. Rutgers makes its BTN debut at Purdue on Friday, March 27. The first pitch is set for 5 p.m. live on the air. In addition to its game on the national stage, the Scarlet Knights will have 13 games streamed live on BTN Plus.

Starting with the remaining two games of its series against Purdue (March 28 and 29), RU is set to have a total of six conference matchups streamed live. The remaining away contests include Ohio State on Friday, April 17 and Sunday, April 19.

The Scarlet Knights' home conference opener against Michigan State on Friday, April 3 can be viewed live on the platform, along with the remaining two games of the series. In addition, the home games against Michigan (April 11 and 12), Maryland (April 21) and Wisconsin (May 1 and 2) can be followed live on BTN Plus.

Baseball  (1-9, 0-0 B1G)

It has been a rough start for the baseball team.  Part of it may be due to the fact that it has faced ranked teams in seven of its nine losses.  A better gauge of the team may come this weekend as they take on several northern teams.

Kyle Wood, Purdue, Jr., 1B, Orland Park, Ill.

  • Batted .818 (9-for-11) with seven RBI, posted an .846 on-base percentage and a 1.455 slugging percentage in a three-game series at Oklahoma
  • Opened the series with a three-hit performance, including a home run and a three-run double
  • Posted four hits in the final game with his second home run of the weekend, scoring three for the game

Pitcher of the Week

Tyler Jay, Illinois, Jr., LHP, Lemont, Ill.

  • Pitched a combined 7.2 scoreless innings against Coastal Carolina and No. 10 Oklahoma State, picking up the save against the Cowboys in the first game of the series and recording the win in the final game against Oklahoma State
  • Struck out eight batters and allowed only three hits
  • Maintained a 0.00 ERA, not allowing a single earned run in 20.1 innings pitched this season

Co-Freshmen of the Week

Logan Sowers, Indiana, OF, Lafayette, Ind.

  • Guided the Hoosiers to a 4-0 week, batting .467 (7-of-15) with a home run and five RBI
  • Opened the Snowbird Baseball Classic with his first career home run against Villanova, bringing in a pair of runs
  • Recorded multiple hits in a pair of games, including three hits and a stolen base in the win over Dartmouth

Alex Troop, Michigan State, LHP, Batavia, Ill

  • Helped the Spartans to a 3-1 win over UMBC, striking out three in 6.0 innings pitched
  • Did not allow a single run, scattering three hits and walking two

Player of the Week
Sierra Romero, Michigan, Jr., 2B, Murrieta, Calif.

  • Posted a .692 batting average, .818 on-base percentage and 1.538 slugging percentage as Michigan claimed four victories
  • Belted three home runs, including one in the first inning against top-ranked Florida
  • Led all Big Ten players last week with in both on-base percentage and slugging percentage
  • Recorded eight walks, including a Michigan single-game record with five walks at Cal State Fullerton

Pitcher of the Week
Kristen Wood, Northwestern, Jr., RHP, Trevor, Wis.

  • Notched her third career no-hitter in her only appearance of the weekend against Ball State
  • Struck out nine batters, including six in a row from the third through the fifth innings
  • Recorded her first no-hitter this season and the 49th in Northwestern history

Freshman of the Week
Danielle Parlich, Minnesota, INF, Queen Creek, Ariz.

  • Notched at least one hit and scored at least one run in each of Minnesota's four wins at the Louisville Slugger Classic
  • Scored six times over the four games and drove in two additional runs
  • Recorded a .500 batting average, .533 on-base percentage a 0.500 slugging percentage
  • Stole three bases on three attempts
