Women's College Cup: Rutgers loses to Penn State

Robert Mayer-USA TODAY Sports

In a heartbreaking loss, the Rutgers women's soccer team lost its semi-final round game of the women's College Cup, dropping a 2-0 match to No. 6 Penn State.  The No. 9 Knights  dropped their second match to the Lions this season, winning the regular season game back in mid-October.

Rutgers gave up the first goal in the 24th minute on a turnover deep in its own territory and went down 1-0 on a goal by Penn State's Frannie Crouse. In the 79th minute, Kaleigh Riehl put the game out of reach with her first goal of the season.  Rutgers never got its offense in gear and was playing catch up all game.

Penn State was able to set the tone and pace in the first half as the Knights got away from their crisp passing, allowing the Nitts to control the pace.

The women finished the season 19-4-3.  Penn State (21-3-2) will meet the winner of the Florida State-Duke game.  That game will be at noon on Sunday and be aired on ESPNU.

On the Banks will update this story shortly.
