After a long break for exams and the holidays, the Rutgers wrestling team is back in action today at the prestigious Midlands Championships. The event is hosted by Northwestern in Evanston, Illinois. Forty-two teams and over 400 individual wrestlers will compete, making it the largest field in the fifty-three year history of the Midlands Championships. Eight of the top ten teams from last year's tournament return this year.
It's the first time Rutgers has participated as a team in this tournament since 2011, when they finished in 11th place. The best individual finish that Rutgers has had at Midlands was Mario Mason, placing as the runner-up at 149 pounds in 2011.
Thirteen of the fifteen Rutgers wrestlers participating are seeded. Other ranked Big Ten teams participating include Iowa, Nebraska and Illinois. Iowa has won this event twenty-four times. The Midlands will be shown live on BTN Plus today starting at 10:30 am for Session I and again at 8pm tonight for session II. Session III resumes tomorrow on BTN Plus at 10:30 am. The Championship Round will be shown tomorrow night on BTN at 8pm.
