Three games. Three wins. Bring on Virginia....or USC.
Under overcast skies at Yurcak Field, the women topped former Big East/AAC foe No. 18 UConn 4-0 in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. It is the first time in program history that the women have advanced this far in the tournament. The Knights built a 2-0 lead in the first half with goals by Madison Tiernan and Katelyn Walters. Tiernan scored her first goal of the season on a header in the 29th minute. Exactly three minutes later, Walters notched her second goal of the season, again on a header.
Rutgers extended its lead in the 50th minute when Cassie Inacio scored off of a Colby Ciarrocca pass. It was her fouth goal of the season. In the 90the minute Ciarocca put in her ninth goal of the season for the final tally.
In goal, sophomore Casey Murphy recorded seven saves en route to her 18th shutout of the season.
With the win, Rutgers moved to 19-3-2 while the Huskies fell to 19-4. The Knights had beaten UConn 2-0 at home on September 13.
Rutgers will next face No. 1 seed Virginia in Charlottesville. That quarterfinal game will be played Nov. 27 at a time still to be determined. UVA beat USC 2-0 at the half.
