Rutgers' big three led the way once again for a key conference victory against the Penn State Lady Lions. Tyler Scaife, Kahleah Copper, and Betnijah Laney combined for 55 points in a 71-51 victory. The win improves the Scarlet Knights' conference record to 3-2 and 12-4 overall.
As a sign of a young squad, the Lady Lions had problems all day turning the ball over. PSU finished with 38 total turnovers, allowing Rutgers to capitalize on fast break possessions. Referees didn't call much in the way of contact, allowing both teams to play a physical fight. Penn State never led, but did get as close to a six point deficit that lasted through halftime. Eventually, Rutgers' talent and athleticism took over, and the Scarlet Knights pulled away in the second half.
Scaife and Copper were hitting mid-range jumpers all day, perfecting Stringer's strategy of taking high-percentage shots. Laney had a good scoring performance as well, netting 18 points on 7-15 shooting. She fell just short of recording another double-double, grabbing a game-high nine rebounds.
#24 Rutgers returns to action next week on Thursday, January 15 for a huge tilt against #12 Maryland at the RAC.
