Rutgers Olympic Sports: We are underway

If it isn't called football, does it count? Yes, it does. And the opening contests for Rutgers' Olympic sports as members of the Big Ten had pretty good results.

The fall sports season is underway. And everyone knows we're 1-0 in football, even getting a couple of votes in the coaches' poll. But there were four other Rutgers teams in action over the last weekend. On the Banks is going to try to be your place to go for updates on all Rutgers sports.

Men's Soccer

Men's soccer opened the season 2-0, recording a 1-0 win over Missouri-Kansas City and following it with a 2-1 victory over Lafayette. Freshman Jason Wright has been the Knights' offense, recording all three goals.

Women's Soccer

The women are 3-0 on the season. Picked to finish 8th in the Big Ten, the squad has beaten Stony Brook (3-1), Vanderbilt (3-0), and former conference foe Seton Hall (1-0). Against the Stony Brook Seawolves, it was all sophomores as Madison Tiernan scored twice and Jennifer Andresen tallied once. Two seniors did all the damage against the Commodores as Amy Pietrangelo scored two goals with Stef Scholz recording one. And sophomore Jessica Puchalski recorded the lone tally against SHU. The Seton Hall game drew 1402 fans to Yurcak Field.

Field Hockey

Following a 1-1 exhibition schedule, the field hockey team has opened the regular season with a 2-0 start. A 3-2 OT win against Bucknell saw Jasmine Cole score the game winner in overtime after Nicole Imbriaco and Sofia Walia had scored during regulation. In the Sacred Heart 5-3 victory, Katie Champion and Sophie Wright each scored twice while Alyssa Bull tallied once.

Volleyball

Volleyball traveled to the Air Force Academy for the Falcons Invitational, finishing with a 2-1 record. The Knights lost their opener to Winthrop (0-3) before recording wins over Southern Illinois-Edwardsville (3-2) and Air Force (3-1).

If you can't get to a home contest, many are broadcast - and rebroadcast - on RVision.
