Big Ten Players of the Week: Johnathan Aiken wins defensive honors

In Rutgers' first game as a member of the Big Ten, a Scarlet Knight won defensive player of the week.

James Snook-USA TODAY Sports

The Big Ten Conference released the players of the week earlier today, and Rutgers' Johnathan Aiken garnered honors for his efforts in a win against Washington State. The senior defensive back was responsible for two of the most important plays of the game, as he forced a fumble on a punt return late in the fourth, as well as broke up a fourth down pass that secured the win for the Scarlet Knights. For a beleaguered secondary, this brings some much-needed confidence to a unit that will surely be challenged all season.

The offensive award went to Nebraska's Ameer Abdullah, who rushed for 178 yards in the first half against Florida Atlantic. The full list of winners are listed below.

Offensive Player of the Week

RB Ameer Abdullah, Nebraska

His 232 yards are the 15th-most in Nebraska history and marked his 18th career game over 100 rushing yards, including his 12th in 14 games since the start of last season.

Defensive Player of the Week

FS Johnathan Aiken, Rutgers

Recorded seven tackles and a pass breakup, and forced one fumble to help lead Rutgers to a victory over Washington State in Seattle.

Special Teams Player of the Week

K Sam Ficken, Penn State

Converted a career-high four field goals, including the game-winning 36-yarder on the final play of the game for a 26-24 victory over Central Florida in Dublin, Ireland.

Co-Freshmen of the Week

QB J.T. Barrett, Ohio State

Finished the game with 276 yards of total offense, completing 12 of 15 passes for 226 yards and adding 50 yards on the ground.

WR DaeSean Hamilton, Penn State

Broke school freshman records for receptions and receiving yards in Penn State's 26-24 victory over Central Florida in Dublin, Ireland.
