Rapid Reax: Rutgers escapes SMU, 55-52

An unbelievable start to the American as Rutgers almost blows it against SMU.

Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

I'm at a loss for words for what I just witnessed on the field in Dallas. Rutgers seriously escaped a horrible loss by winning in three overtimes against SMU. If you're a masochist, go ahead and look at the stats Garrett Gilbert accumulated against the Scarlet Knight defense. This is a guy who transferred out of Texas because he couldn't beat out whoever starts there now. Basically, just be afraid of what is to come next week against Teddy Bridgewater.

I understand there were some ridiculous calls by the refs that made the game closer than it should have been, here's the bottom line: the defense can't stop anyone. SMU is not Texas A&M. They are not Fresno State. The non-fumble recovery by Jeremy Deering really changed the makeup of the game, and Nova's fumble late in the fourth didn't help things at all. Regardless, this defense needs to seriously study some game film because they can't stop a nosebleed.

Who is the number one wide receiver on SMU? Answer: Jeremy Johnson. It took me about one minute through a Google search to figure that out. Take a look at the film, and you'll see that he's wide open on several plays. Dave Cohen is not earning his paycheck giving up 20 receptions to the number one threat.

I shudder to think what awaits us in Louisville, where a quarterback by the name of Bridgewater has been absolutely tearing it up this season. A win is a win, and I'm happy that Rutgers is 1-0 this week, but wow. Look for the full recap tomorrow.
